Delete Files Permanently : Online Help
How to wipe free space
When you delete files using the 'Delete' button, it doesn't really delete files from your computer, removable disks, USB-flash drives, memory sticks, etc. This operation just removes the reference to the file but file still exists. It protects your information from accidental deleting. But in this case any unauthorized person may find and recover your sensitive files.
To protect your privacy, you should wipe free space to ensure that previously 'deleted' files cannot be recovered.
To wipe free space:

Tips:
1. If you have Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows 2008, we recommend that you run Delete Files Permanently Portable as an administrator so you have permissions to delete all necessary files, wipe free space and wipe the Recycle Bin.
If you use Windows XP/2003/2000/ME/98, make sure you have administrative privileges.
2. If you use anti-virus scanner that checks files saved to the disk, it could slow permanent deleting files, wiping free space and Recycle Bin as the anti-virus scanner checks files after each overwriting/verification pass.

Double-click the Delete Files Permanently desktop icon
Click the 'Tools' button in the toolbar.
Select 'Wipe Free Space'.

Select a wiping scheme from the drop-down list.
|
Note: The more passes a wiping scheme has, the more time the process takes. Unless special security is desired, the single-pass, double-pass or triple-pass wiping methods are sufficient to prevent data recovering.

Select where you want to wipe free space.
Click the 'Wipe Free Space' button.

How to use Delete Files Permanently I had to terminate wiping and now I have tmp files stored on my drive. What do I do?
While wiping free space, the program creates temporary files in the root directory of the disk where you wipe free space. Temporary files will look like $DeleteFilesPermanently1.TMP, $DeleteFilesPermanently2.TMP, $DeleteFilesPermanently3.TMP, etc. When the process is finished or stopped through the program, the program deletes temporary files automatically. If wiping was terminated due to computer failure, abnormal computer shut down or power loss, temporary files are not deleted automatically and you should delete them manually.
